Real Advances, Real Risks

“The mere formulation of a problem is far more essential than its solution, which may be merely a mathematical or experimental skills. To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle requires creative imagination and marks real advances in science.” Albert Einstein

Taking the time to think, to question, to ask "why not?" is often a casualty of a busy schedule. Getting yourself away from distractions, relaxed and involved in a simple pattern - a walk, cutting vegetables for soup, knitting, painting, doodling, a hot bath, a hammock cradled cloud watch - often releases our mind enough to become aware of new possibilities or fresh ideas.

You don't need to be a nuclear scientist to benefit from a fresh approach. Challenges in workflow patterns, family dynamics, relationships, marketing and creating profitable strategies all clog our efforts to move forward and tire us.

Even if you decide not to change directions, knowing that you could, believing that you have possibilities beyond one choice is empowering and invigorating.

Becoming a person who is known for fresh ideas, innovative problem solving and brilliant strategies comes at a price... the risk of criticism, the reality that most new ideas don't work like we think and the appearance of being a slacker... staring at the clouds, feeling the breeze, soaking in the tub, can curb our willingness to be open to new solutions and possibilities.

Remember when you learned how to whistle? How many times did you spit and blow and "fake it"? Having that same willingness as an adult to do it "wrong" until you get it "right" is the real risk that leads to real advances.
